Esperance Power Station Batteries

Project Name: Esperance Power Station Batteries
Location: Esperance, WA
Client: Horizon Power
Fuel Source: Gas/Solar/Wind/BESS
Battery: 1.00MWh

Between 2020 and 2022, Hybrid Systems Australia’s parent company, Pacific Energy, delivered a state-of-the-art hybrid power system for Horizon Power in the Western Australian town of Esperance.

This Build-Own-Operate system replaced a 20-year-old gas turbine station with a highly efficient 38MW hybrid power generation system, comprising:

–  A central 4MW solar farm
– Two 4.5 MW wind turbines
– A 4MW battery energy storage system (BESS), designed, built and installed by Hybrid Systems Australia
– A new, 22MW high-efficiency low-emissions gas power station

The system has the capacity to meet nearly half of the power requirements for the town of Esperance and surrounds with renewably generated electricity and has been designed to accommodate new technology that will allow more green energy to be added over the life of the system.

Esperance is the first regional town in Australia to be powered by a system that integrates gas, wind and solar power, and battery storage.

The new facilities, which were officially opened in May 2022 by the Premier of Western Australia, supply power to the town of Esperance under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
